An extension of Diplo’s label Mad Decent, Jeffree’s is a virtual imprint on the prowl for the best “subterranean” underground producers. The label’s latest offering is Zebra Katz, the persona of Ojay Morgan, a multimedia/performance artist whose debut release is titled Ima Read. The EP features Njena Reddd Foxxx and consists of the songs “Ima Read”, “Hey Ladies”, and four remixes of the title track by Slick Shoota, DJ Sliink, J-Wow, and MikeQ & B. Ames. Because the musical production on “Ima Read” is deliberately sparse, beatmakers can easily rework the number to match a variety of styles.
“Ima Read” harks back to an “old voguing term describing someone verbally insulting an opponent about something not so apparent to the average viewer.” A minimalist bass dominates the track’s beat, perfectly setting up Katz and Reddd Foxx’s classroom word play: “Ima take that bitch to college/ Ima give that bitch some knowledge/ Ima read that bitch/ Proofread that bitch.”
Schoolyard trash talk and after-party rhythms coalesce in the visuals which feature a grainy educational video aesthetic and masked school girls possessed by the repetitive tempo. An overwhelming sense of repulsion emanates throughout the track as Katz’s leveled delivery proves to be severely intimidating.
