Review: Rain Dog See Hear EP

In his initial email regarding this release, Rebel co-bossman Taylor prefaced what I was about to hear with “pretty cerebral shit.” Getting into the thick of it, I understood what he meant–the four track EP from Newcastle-based Rain Dog, out on DFRNT’s increasingly top-notch imprint Cut, is rich with diverse yet cohesive sonic elements that hit you deeper than the average release. Not quite downtempo, not quite garage, Rain Dog–who classifies himself as a dubstep artist on his soundcloud–cultivates a brilliantly emotive collection of tunes that are equally appropriate for vibrant summer nights as they are for sleepy winter mornings. Maybe that’s what Taylor meant when he said “cerebral”; whatever state of mind you happen to find yourself in, there’s a good chance your head will be able to wrap around one of these gems and hold on tight.

Rain Dog – Beyond Their years

See Hear EP is now available for a name-your-own-price donation via Cut Music’s bandcamp. You can download our pick of the release, “Beyond Their Years,” above.
