Interview: Synchrodogs

Synchrodogs is a joined force created by the in-love boyfriend Roman Noven and girlfriend Tania Shcheglova. The two artists are currently living in Ukraine, where they collaborate on everything from fashion shoots [recent spread for Harper's Bazaar] to their own conceptualized photo-collage series [underworld series]. Synchrodogs’ work rubs off a strong sense of emotion throughout each and every photograph, naturally leaving these image forever remembered in our minds.

Let’s start off with the basics, when and where did your interest for photography originate?
We naturally have too much energy to “just exist”. We can not precisely explain why we went exactly into photography, we just got our cameras (not guitars, nor thread for sewing) presented by friends and that made us start doing it, though separately at first.

Can you tell us little bit about your background outside of photography?
Now it’s pretty full of trains, as we are shooting projects in different cities. Besides we like sleeping at the balcony and walking with our small cat whose tiny back is the best thing to pat every day.

Who are all of the people in your photographs? Where do you get these ideas for your photo shoots from?
All the people from our pictures are mostly just the two of us, as we see weird things around just walking or driving on the motorbike, and no time to look for somebody who can pose for us.

Can you tell us about Synchrodogs? When did you both start working together and what is the history behind this collaboration?
Well, we started dating, not working. Shootings used to be more like a diary at first, spontaneous and personal. But we definitely wanted to do something freaky, as these sweet beauty pictures are replaced by very similar ones every day.

Most of your photographs include flash, creating a very upfront look into your subjects. Can you elaborate on this?
Some of the pics, we agree, are made on-the-spot, the other ones are prearranged from the very beginning till the very end. But anyway we choose the composition and posing carefully.

How did your fashion spread for Harper’s Bazaar come about? What was the inspiration behind the series?
The project is all about searching the perennial youth. We were looking for some outer space shapes and the building (which in fact is Kiev crematory) appeared to be suitable, still not too glamorous.

What music have you been listening to lately?
Top 10 songs for today are:
1. Rimer London ft. Cata Pirata – Love Dagger (Bear Damen Alternate Disco Remake)
2. White Lies – strangers [holy other remix]
3. Casino Times – That’s The Truth
4. Actress – maze
5. Holy Other – Know Where (taken from the album With U)
6. Clams Casino – Brainwash By London
7. INC – Heartcrimes
8. Little Dragon – When I Go Out
9. Baths – Seaside Town
10. Dead Man’s Bones – pa pa power

As for projects, what are you currently working on and what do you have planned down the line?
In plans are some printed publications we should be proud of. We also worked on some secret projects which are much more striking than anything we have done before and are available for publisher’s offers.

And lastly, what’s the best way to spend your weekends off?
Going to a party with free sushi catering.
