Atlas Sound – Terra Incognita

Keeping in the spirit of being one of the busiest and most prolific figures in music today, Bradford Cox has announced the release of a new Atlas Sound LP entitled Parallax. According to Wikipedia, “parallax is an apparent displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight.” This is a pretty appropriate name considering the depth and subtle psychedelia that lies hand-in-hand with Bradford Cox’s body of work and how it affects the different ways his music can be interpreted depending on where you’re standing.

The first song released off Parallax is called Terra Incognita, a six-and-a-half miniature epic that is redolent of the twisted blissfolk territory that was strayed into on his last solo album Logos with songs like Attic Lights and in songs captured in recent bootleg recordings. The primary difference in this new song is the obvious progression and polishing of his songwriting abilities and in that this is the first Atlas Sound album to be recorded in a non-home studio.

The song is comfortably divided into two sections, the first being a bare slow burner that showcases Bradford’s penchant for using an acoustic guitar as a primary instrument. The song gradually builds and segues into a second part, where all of the instrumentation is set free and spirals into a lightly psychedelic period of bliss, the kind that Bradford’s music is deservedly recognized for.
