Despite the near 12-month hiatus since his last original work was released, Deadboy’s stock has never been higher. From earning rave reviews from artists like Drake, to gracing many a ‘Top 10 of 2010’ list with his infectious banger ‘If U Want Me’ and completing a debut US tour, Deadboy has certainly not been procrastinating during this break.
Meeting Deadboy after performing at Abandon Silence in Liverpool, UK, incidentally his first gig back in his home country after returning from America, we spoke in depth, and in light, about his future plans, famous fans and, naturally, favorite film.
Deadboy – HERE (Preview clips of NMBRS15)
So, are you looking forward to the release of your new EP on the Numbers imprint?
Yeah I guess so, these are tracks I’ve had for a long time now so its good that they’re finally going to be out there and off my hard drive. It’s hard to see a tune fully finished until it’s on a piece of vinyl.
It has been quite a long time since we heard original material come from you, are there any particular reasons for this?
Partly because I had the laptop with all my tunes and software and everything robbed from my house and had to start again, partly cos I didn’t want to repeat the first few records, and there have been a lot of hold ups with this record but I’ve got a whole bunch of tunes to follow this EP.
How did the collaboration with Numbers come about?
They liked ‘U Cheated’ and asked me to send them some tunes, and I played some of their parties and stuff.
You recently completed a US tour, including trips to SXSW and Low End Theory, how did you find the experience?
It was great, it was my first time going to the US so to do so many cities in one was cool. The Mexican food is amazing.
How did the shows in America compare to those in the UK?
It differed with the shows and cities, New York was my favourite show I think, it was a good vibe, and Low End Theory was fun. I think the US is still more on the dubstep from the UK than what we’re doing but there were a lot of people into it still.
“It’s cool that the people I’m doing these remixes of are hearing them, and not sueing me.”
Drake has been quoted as being a big fan of your recent remix of his track ‘Fireworks’. Has he made any contact with you? How does it feel to know that someone of the stature of Drake is a fan?
No he hasn’t been in contact with me. Its cool, you know I did that remix in like 3 hours just to play out, I might have spent more time on it if I’d have known it would have been that popular! It’s cool that the people I’m doing these remixes of are hearing them, and not sueing me. I heard Cassie heard some of the remixes I did of her too.
What are your future plans, after the EP is released of course?
Another EP pretty quickly I think. I have loose plans to do an album, but I’m vary wary of the ‘dance’ album so it might be something a bit different.
